Cade Stover
Summary
Cade Stover was selected in the 4th Round (#123 Overall) in the 2024 Draft out of Ohio State University. Stover is a tight end who combines physical size, competitive toughness, and a solid receiving skill set. Transitioning from various roles in college (including linebacker) to become a productive TE at Ohio State, he demonstrated the ability to contribute both in the passing game and as a blocker. In the NFL, Stover projects as a three-down option with good upside, especially if his blocking and route-refinement continue to improve. However, he is somewhat raw in certain areas and may need time to develop into a consistent starter rather than an immediate dominant force.
Strengths
Size and physicality: He possesses a strong, well-proportioned frame with enough length and strength to box out defenders and handle multiple alignments. PFSN
Reliable hands & receiving ability: In college, Stover demonstrated his soft hands, strong hand-eye coordination, and ability to adjust to throws. PFSN
Run-after-catch and finishing ability: Once in open space, he shows the strength and leg drive to make additional yards, finishing through contact. NFL Draft Buzz
Blocking willingness & versatility: While not elite in all blocking facets yet, he has shown competency in blocking assignments, contributing as a TE who can help in the run game. Battle Red Blog
Football IQ & adaptability: Having played different positions in college (RB, LB, DE, then TE), he shows a willingness to learn, adaptability and high football intelligence.
Weaknesses
Separation / elite speed limitations: Stover lacks top-tier explosion or deep-threat speed compared to some TE peers, which may limit his ability to consistently beat defensive backs in open space. NFL Draft Buzz
Blocking technique still developing: While he shows ability and willingness, his run-block and in-line blocking technique need refinement (e.g., pad level, sustained blocks). Battle Red Blog
Flexibility / route tree constraints: His route-running repertoire and ability to cut and change direction at an elite level are not yet at the highest level; his agility and fluidity could improve.
Catch-radius & converting off-target throws: He is competent, but not exceptional, at extending for off-target throws or making catches outside his frame compared to some elite TE prospects. NFL Draft Buzz
Age & experience at position: Because he switched roles and only solidified at TE later in college, his overall experience at the position is somewhat less than some peers, meaning a slightly longer development curve. PFSN
Fit & Outlook
Stover projects well as a starting or near-starting tight end in an offense that values multi-down usage, utilizes play-action, and leverages TE mismatches in the intermediate zones. He fits nicely in an 11-personnel set (1 RB, 1 TE, 3 WR) where he can be used inline, in the slot, or motioned. In his early NFL seasons, expect him to contribute as a reliable TE2 or rotational starter while the team develops his blocking and pass-run versatility. Over time, he could become a full TE1, especially if his blocking improves and he earns more targets. Stover’s ceiling is a solid starting tight end with 50+ receptions, 600+ yards, and a meaningful impact as a blocker and receiver. As of now, Stover is a dependable backup/wing-tight end who contributes in passing situations but may not dominate either facet (receiving or blocking) at the highest level.
