Riq Woolen

Summary

Tariq Woolen was selected in Round 5 (#153 Overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft out of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). A former wide receiver who converted to cornerback late in his college career, Woolen entered the league as a traits-based prospect with rare physical tools. At UTSA, he recorded 3 interceptions, 15 passes defended, and 47 tackles in his final season, showcasing elite length and speed despite limited experience at the position. In the NFL, Woolen delivered one of the most impressive rookie seasons by a cornerback in recent memory compiling 6 interceptions, earning Pro Bowl honors, Second-Team All-Pro recognition, and a top-three finish in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. Through the 2024 season, he has totaled 10+ career interceptions, 30+ passes defended, and consistently ranks among league leaders in yards per target allowed when healthy. Woolen can do some goofy things, most famously causing an unnecessary sideline taunting penalty in the 2026 NFC Conference Championship game vs. the Los Angeles Rams.

Strengths

  • Built in a Lab: Rare height, length (4.88 Measurables score) and straight-line speed (24.25 Athleticism score) for the position.

  • Recovery Ability: Can erase separation with closing speed. Comfortable playing top-down against vertical threats and comfortable on an island.

  • Ball Skills: As a former WR, attacks the football aggressively and converts chances into turnovers. Turnover production often changes momentum.

  • Im-press-ive: Long arms allows him to disrupt releases and passing windows. Uses vision and length effectively in Cover 3 and quarters.

Weaknesses

  • Technique Consistency: Woolen is newer to the position and still refining footwork and transitions. Has been benched intermittently in his career to allow him time to reset and recalibrate.

  • Recognition & Discipline: Can be late reacting to double moves and complex stems. Aggressive nature can be manipulated by veteran quarterbacks.

  • Hip Fluidity: Tall frame can limit sudden direction changes. More effective covering ground straight line and heavy curl/comeback concepts can give him trouble.

  • Physicality in Run Support: Willing, but tackling consistency can improve.

Outlook

Woolen is an ideal fit for Seattle’s defensive identity, particularly in Cover 3 and press-zone structures that allow him to leverage his elite length and speed while keeping vision on the quarterback. He profiles best as a boundary CB1/CB2, capable of matching vertical threats and generating turnovers without constant safety help. His presence allows Seattle to tilt coverage and be more aggressive elsewhere in the defense. Looking ahead, Woolen projects as a long-term starting corner with All-Pro upside. While continued refinement in technique and discipline will determine whether he becomes a consistent shutdown defender, his physical traits and playmaking instincts give him a rare ceiling. With health and continued coaching, Woolen has a chance to make some good money as he heads into free agency but won’t be a fit for every defensive scheme. A team like the Tennessee Titans with Robert Saleh/Gus Bradley could make the most sense.
