Jonah Coleman

Jonah Coleman Player Progression

Summary

Jonah Coleman (22 years old) is a Senior running back from the University of Washington. Coleman transferred to UW after beginning his college career at the University of Arizona. After following Head Coach Jedd Fisch to Seattle, Coleman totaled 1,811 yards and 15 TD’s on 349 carries as a Husky. The Stockton, California native served as a team captain for Washington as a Senior in 2025. At 5’8” and 220 lbs, Coleman is a compact runner who has displayed durability and versatility as a college runner. Off the field, Coleman has also been praised by coaches for his growth, leadership, and maturity. “He’s thrived academically. He’s thrived in being a known commodity in Seattle. His maturity level has completely flipped.,” said Jedd Fisch in 2025. Coleman was also praised as one of the players that helped lead the turnaround at the University of Arizona with their 2022 recruiting class that featured 2025 1st round pick Tetairoa McMillan, 2025 2nd round pick Jonah Savaiinaea, starting QB Noah Fifita, 2026 CB prospect Tacario Davis, as well as transfer WR Jacob Cowing, who became a 4th round pick of the 49ers in 2024.

Strengths

  • Durability: Coleman is a four-year player at Arizona and Washington, who played in 50 games total. Coleman only missed one game during his two seasons at Washington, and that was due to a minor knee injury this past fall that kept him out against Purdue.

  • Professional Pass Protector: “You not gonna play if you can’t pass pro. It’s simple. I’m paying him (the QB) $100 million , you’re getting paid $2 million. Who’s more important,” Coleman said at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine. “That’s a part of being selfless. You have to be wanting to pick up in pass pro.” That quote went viral and that mentality shows on tape as Coleman shows no hesitation sticking his nose in there to protect.

  • Protecting the Ball: Coleman touched the ball 639 times over his entire college career as a rusher and receiver, and only lost 1 fumble. As we see every season, two things that can keep talented running backs off the field in the NFL are fumbles and issues with pass protection. Those are two areas that should not be an issue for Jonah Coleman.

  • Smooth and Efficient: Displays a patient running style with the ability to set blocks up. Coleman has impressive lateral agility to make defenders miss in the hole as well. His style won’t always be flashy but it is often effective.

Weaknesses

  • Speed and Explosiveness: For teams looking for a home run hitter out of the backfield, Coleman is unlikely to be high on their board, as long speed and explosiveness are not his calling cards . Coleman also did not participate in workouts at the Scouting Combine.

  • 2024 vs. 2025: Detractors will notice Coleman’s production regress as a Senior compared to his first season at Washington. Coleman’s yards-per-carry average dropped from 5.5 to 4.9 and his total rushing yards dropped from 1,053 to 758.

  • Consistent Tackle Breaking: Built like a bowling ball at 5’8” and 220 lbs, Coleman will show the ability to break tackles and finish through contact, but not quite as consistently as you would hope to see out of a player with his build and skillset. Coaches will likely want to see Coleman carry his speed through tacklers at the next level to reach his potential.

  • Jack of All Trades, Master of None?: Many scouts will often look to define what a player’s “super power” is, and while Jonah Coleman does a lot of things well, he will be unlikely to excite teams that value traits — like the Indianapolis Colts — more than others.

Outlook

Jonah Coleman projects as a running back that can play on all 3 downs, and he should be able to get on the field quickly at the NFL level. Coleman has shown the ability to pass protect, catch the ball, and keep the ball off the ground as a ball carrier. While teams looking to add an explosive playmaker to their offense will likely target other players, Coleman’s mentality, durability, experience, and well-rounded skillset are likely to intrigue teams in the middle portion of the draft. Overall, Coleman should find a role quickly as a rookie and he will interest teams that are looking to draft a contributing player that will add to a RB committee and locker room from day one.
