Jalon Kilgore

Jalon Kilgore Player Progression

Summary

Jalon Kilgore (21 years old) is a safety who has played his entire college career at South Carolina with no transfers. In 2025, Kilgore started throughout the season and recorded 54 total tackles, 2 interceptions, 12 pass breakups, and 2 fumble recoveries, serving as a versatile presence in the secondary with the ability to impact both in coverage and as a run defender. The permanent team captain and team’s co-Defensive MVP, Kilgore’s production earned him Second-Team All-SEC honors and All-America consideration, building on Freshman All-SEC recognition earlier in his career as he quickly developed into a full-time starter. At Eatonton (GA) Putnam County, Kilgore recorded over 900 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns as a WR while also racking up 114 tackles. Kilgore earned a degree in Public Health and his commitment to his studies led to his recognition as an Academic All-SEC All-American, a title highlighting his dual success as a high-performing student and athlete. In early 2026, Kilgore was also named a finalist for the Blanchard-Rogers award, which honors the most outstanding collegiate player with South Carolina ties based on both on-field and off-field excellence. Teammates and coaches frequently cited his obsessive film study and was known for being the first player in the building on Mondays, often arriving before the coaching staff to review the previous Saturday’s tape. This high "football IQ" is what allowed him to graduate in just three years while starting every single game of his career. From an injury standpoint, Kilgore has suffered from a few recurring hamstring injuries but started 33 out of 36 possible games and was largely available.

Strengths

  • Ball-Cock: Reads the quarterback with confidence and attacks throwing lanes. Not passive in coverage and his experience as a wide receiver shows up in how he crashes down on the football with excellent ball skills. Actively looks to create turnovers rather than just secure tackles.

  • Home on the Range: Covers ground efficiently from two-high and middle-field looks and can overlap routes outside the hash. Plants and drives downhill quickly on underneath throws and closes space with intent.

  • Fluid: Smooth hips and transitions allow him to redirect without losing balance. Not a risk when asked to press at the line from inside and turn and run with shiftier receivers.

  • DB Versatility: Comfortable rotating, playing deep, or working into intermediate zones. Will step up in run support from slot alignments and doesn’t avoid contact.

Weaknesses

  • Over trusting Eyes: Will lock onto the QB and drive early, leaving space behind him on layered concepts or double moves. On RPOs and play-action, he can commit quickly and vacate deep responsibility. Needs to better balance aggression with depth responsibility in complex coverage structures.

  • Angle Monitor: When attacking downhill, he can take aggressive angles that allow ball carriers to slip outside. When reading run/pass, he can be a step late flipping and gaining depth.

  • Strain vs. Size: Bigger receivers and tight ends can tie him up if he doesn’t win first contact.

  • All or Nothing: Will occasionally go for impact instead of wrapping, leading to missed opportunities. Creates turnovers but also opens windows when his reads are wrong.

Outlook

Kilgore is one of our Green Gem players and projects as a versatile, instinctive defensive back with strong range, ball skills, and the ability to impact the game both deep and near the line of scrimmage, giving him true multi-role value in modern secondaries. He fits best in multiple-coverage defenses that emphasize split-safety looks, disguise, and post-snap rotation, allowing him to play as a deep safety, rotate into the box, or match up in underneath zones. Kilgore is trending as a Day 2 prospect with a Round 2–3 projection in the 2026 NFL Draft and will be a huge asset to any club that covets interchangeable safeties/slot defenders/three safety looks who can cover, tackle, and create turnovers.
